Pain is a serious and costly public health issue affecting more than 116 million Americans and costing more than $100 billion each year. It is a hidden epidemic that affects more Americans than diabetes, heart disease and cancer combined according to the National Center for Health statistics. It is a leading cause of disability in the United States. As the 75 million Baby Boomers move toward retirement, the epidemic of untreated and undertreated pain is expected to continue.
